Not much larger on the map than a few ink splashes by a busy cartographer, the Maldive Islands stretch from the south western tip of India all the way to the Equator. One of the most attenuated countries in the world, the 1,196 islands, in 26 distinct coral atolls, are spread over a total area of 90,000 square kilometres (about 36,000 square miles) of the Indian Ocean, yet less than 0.5 percent of this is land. Some 200 of the islands are inhabited.

Until the arrival of tourism, fishing was the main occupation in this nation of seafarers, and the relaxed pace of life seems to have carried over into the twentieth century. The graceful sailing dhonis (small craft) of old may have given way to motorised versions, but fishing with pole and line is still a common site throughout the islands.

The Maldives has the most beautiful tropical scenery, graceful coconut palms leaning over crystal-clear lagoons, coral reefs promising great snorkelling and scuba diving, and lots of sunshine. In fact, all the ingredients that make up the classic desert island. With the increasing pace of life in the modern world, it has become the ultimate getaway for those who like sun, sand, sea and doing nothing ...the last Paradise

An archipelago of 1190 islands, straddling the equator and scattered like gems across the Indian Ocean. Palm fringed islands with sparkling white beaches, turquoise lagoons and fabulous coral reefs. Clear, warm waters and magnificent marine life combine to create a water playground.

Most resorts are located on their own island, many having beach, or over-water bungalows. And the lifestyle is absolutely relaxed, with little need to worry about footwear, at any time. Here you can sunbathe, swim, snorkel, scuba, visit nearby "deserted" islands, or undertake sightseeing or fishing expeditions. The marine life is absolutely stunning and you will never tire of the innumerable species of highly-coloured fish which flit about you.

Arrangements here are usually half or full board and there is little need to worry about your next meal - resorts providing an amazing variety at their table-laden buffets.

All you need do is relax and let the pleasures of the Maldives sweep over you as you enjoy the holiday of a lifetime!

HANDY HINTS:

CLIMATE:

In a nation with less than one percent land and over 99 percent sea, the weather obviously plays a significant role in day-to-day life. For a long time Maldivians have organized their lives based on a system on nakaiy. Each nakaiy is 13 or 14 days long and is divided into two seasons; iruvai northest monsoon and hulhangu south west monsoon. The nakaiy calendar is still used to determine such things as the best time for fishing, travel or planting crops.

The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year round and a great deal of sunshine. The warm tropical climate results in relatively minor variations in daily temperature throughout the year. The hottest month on average is April and the coolest, December. The weather is determined largely by the monsoons.

There is a significant variation in the monthly rainfall levels. February is the driest with January to April being relatively dry, May and October records the highest average monthly rainfall. The southwest monsoon or hulhangu from May to September is the wet season. Rough seas and strong winds are common during this period. The northeast monsoon iruvai falls between December to April. This is a period of clear skies, lower humidity and very little rain. The Maldives is in the equatorial belt and therefore severe storms and cyclones are extremely rare events. However the country is affected whenever cyclones form in the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea. The spiraling clouds of the weather systems appear over the Maldives causing spells of rain.

SHOPPING:

Shopping is the favorite activity for the locals especially in the evenings, when it is cooler. The Majeedhee Magu, which is the main road on the island, has along its sides various shops selling goods from the smallest commodities to virtually everything you could think of. The shops are well stocked with garments, perfumes and cosmetics, jewelry, watches or electronics, to name just a few. Many find it a pleasant experience to join the throngs of shoppers on the main shopping streets in the evenings. All shops are open until 11.00 in the night, except for prayer times, when they are closed for 15 minutes.

WHAT TO WEAR:

Dress is generally casual. T-shirts and cotton clothing are most suitable. In Male’, the capital island and other inhabited islands it is recommended that women wear modest clothing without baring too much.

ELECTRICITY:

The electric system is 230-240 Volts -AC

VISA:

No prior visa is required to enter the Republic of Maldives. Entry permit will be granted to visitors on arrival at designated ports of entry, based on the immigration requirements.
