HONG KONG CLIMATE AND WEATHER GUIDE:

Hong Kong's climate is sub-tropical, tending towards temperate for nearly half the year. During November and December there are pleasant breezes, plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. Many people regard these as the best months of the year. January and February are more cloudy, with occasional cold fronts followed by dry northerly winds. March and April can also be very pleasant although there are occasional spells of high humidity. Fog and drizzle can be particularly troublesome on high ground which is exposed to the southeast, and air traffic and ferry services are occasionally disrupted because of reduced visibility.

May to August are hot and humid with occasional showers and thunderstorms, particularly during the mornings. Afternoon temperatures often exceed 31 C whereas at night, temperatures generally remain around 26 C with high humidity. There is usually a fine dry spell in July which may possibly last for one to two weeks, or for even longer in some years.

July to September are the months during which Hong Kong is most likely to be affected by tropical cyclones, although gales are not unusual at any time between May and November. On average, about 31 tropical cyclones form in the western North Pacific or China Seas every year, and about half of them reach typhoon strength (maximum winds of 118 kilometres per hour or more).

Severe weather phenomena that can affect Hong Kong include tropical cyclones, strong winter monsoon winds, and thunderstorms with associated squalls that are most frequent from April to September. Waterspouts and hailstorms occur infrequently, while snow and tornadoes are rare.

TRANSPORT:

Hong Kong has a highly developed and sophisticated transport network, encompassing both public and private transport. The Octopus card stored value smart card payment system can be used to pay for fares on almost all railways, buses and ferries in Hong Kong.  Hong Kong has several different modes of public rail transport. The two metro systems for the city are the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) and KCR which acts as a link between Hong Kong and mainland China . Most ferry services are provided by licensed ferry operators serving outlying islands, new towns, across Victoria Harbour, Macau and cities in mainland China. The oldest service, the legendary Star Ferry, operates four lines between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island and has provided cost-effective transport for over a century. Popular with tourists desiring a panoramic view of Hong Kong's skyline and harbour, many Hong Kong residents consider the Star Ferry as one of the city's most treasured cultural icons.

ELECTRICITY:

220 Volts , 50 Hertz. Hong Kong uses both G and M type plugs (Type M has the type with 3 round long pins which has replaced Type G - but is still found (Type G has the 3 long rectangle pins)

MONEY:

The currency used in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong dollar.

LANGUAGE:

Chinese and English are both official languages of Hong Kong. The majority of the population in Hong Kong are descendants of migrants from mainland China.  Smaller minority groups include expatriates and descendants of expatriates from countries such as Nepal, India, Philippines and the UK.  Therefore there is a wide assortment of languages spoken.

VISAS:

Australian Passport holders do not require a visa to enter Hong Kong but must have a current passport with more than 6 months validity.

Hotel and restaurants automatically add a service fee to your bill, personal tipping is not compulsory (at your discretion).
