Location:
It has justly been described as the most attractive city in Southeast Asia. Or, as one visitor described it: "It's like living in a garden." That's Kuching, Sarawak's capital, one of the most live able and people-friendly cities in the region. Kuching, has all the modern amenities without losing its old world charm. Like much of Malaysia, Kuching has a tropical climate with average daytime temperatures hovering between 24 and 32 Celsius. In Kuching, you will be astonished by the beauty of the green environment. People here are nice, friendly and always offer warm welcome to tourists. Furthermore, traveling around Kuching is easy. There is no need to take a taxi or bus to enjoy the wonders of Kuching since most tourist attractions are located in or nearby the city. In heart of the city, there is a river separating the north and the south called the 'Sarawak River'. Riding a Sampan - a long boat - along the Sarawak River is an unforgettable experience. From the river, you can get a spectacular view of the Malay Kampungs (villages) with a gorgeous mountainous back ground. You also get to see a far distant view of the 19th century Chinese shop-houses, the Malay mosque, the square tower and the attractive Margherita Fort. There is a wide range of accommodations ranging from budget hotels to luxury 5 star hotels. After a long day, you can feast yourself on local delicacies such as seafood, chicken rice, Malay Nasi Lemak and Chinese noodles.
Damai Beach
Take white sand beaches lapped by the South China Sea, add rainforest walks and an imposing jungle -covered mountain and you have Damai. This is Sarawak's main beach resort area. Once accessible only by river, Damai, on the Santubong Peninsula, is now just a 40 minutes drive from Kuching. And the drive is well worth it. Damai boasts international-class resort hotels. Each has its own secluded beach, landscaped, free form swimming pool and offers jet skiing, water-skiing, windsurfing, mountain biking, tennis, squash and fitness centers. You could spend a whole holiday without leaving the resort, but nearby are the Arnold Palmer-designed Damai Golf & Country Club, the Sarawak Cultural Villaqe and the sleepy fishing villages of Santubong and Buntal with their excellent seafood restaurants'. For the more adventurous there is the climb through the rainforest to the summit of Mount Santubong. It's a five to six-hour trek and your hotel will provide a guide and a packed lunch.
